What is a diabetes foot screening?

A diabetes foot screening is a simple check carried out by a healthcare professional to examine your feet and assess your risk of developing foot problems. It looks at your circulation, sensation (feeling), and overall foot health to help prevent serious complications.

Who should be screened?

Everyone living with diabetes (all types of diabetes) should have their feet screened regularly. Most people should have a foot check at least once a year, even if they have no current problems. Some people may need checks more often depending on their level of risk or if they’ve had previous foot issues.

Why is screening important?

Foot screening is important because diabetes can reduce blood flow and damage nerves in your feet. This means small problems such as cuts or blisters can go unnoticed and develop into serious infections.

Regular screening helps:

• Detect problems early

• Prevent ulcers and infections

• Reduce the risk of amputations

Most serious foot complications can be prevented with regular checks and early treatment is highly effective.

What to expect at your appointment?

At your 10-minute screening, Matthew Francis, Managing Podiatrist from Atlantic Podiatry will:

• Ask you to remove your shoes and socks

• Check your skin for cuts, blisters, or areas of concern

• Look between your toes and examine the shape of your feet

• Check blood flow by feeling pulses or using a handheld device

• Test sensation using simple tools to see how well you can feel touch

• Ask questions about your foot care and any symptoms

At the end, you’ll be told your risk level (low, moderate, or high) and advised on how to care for your feet and whether you need any follow-up care.
