Chronic kidney disease (CKD) means that the kidneys are damaged and are not working as well as they used to, either due to being diseased or damaged in some way or aging. Screening is important because the symptoms associated with kidney disease typically only occur at the more advanced stages of the disease.
Statistics in Bermuda reveal a concerning trend—only 7% of CKD cases are diagnosed in stages 1 or 2, while 20% are diagnosed at more advanced stages 4 or 5. This highlights the urgency to detect and address CKD in its early phases.
